It's a new year and time for a Clayworks Giveaway!

This Stoneware Sunflower Pendant will go to person with the most referrals to my Clayworks by Lisa Boucher Facebook Page,where I post updates on my latest creations and special promotions in my Clayworksnh Etsy shop! Just be sure to have them mention you referred them.

Crafted from high fire tan speckled clay, and glazed with Coyote cone six glazes. Petals of Buttercup, a Goldenrod Shino and Buttercup center, and framed in Turquoise Matt.

It measures 2" x 2 1/8", glazed on the reverse with Turquoise Matt and matches several of the pieces in my shop.

The winner will be announced Friday, January 20th.

I hope you all survived the holiday festivities, and had a joyous season with loved ones. We enjoyed good family times, and gathered together for our 2nd annual (and possibly last) gingerbread hootenanny.

It was great fun and tons of sugar was had by all. I just don't recommend it unless you have a lot of time to devote to such an undertaking. I won't mention any names, but apparently someone has been eating the trees because they seem to be disappearing.

We're enjoying the lights on the tree for one more night until alas I will have to pack everything away tomorrow. Now that the dust has settled from the wrapping paper mountain, and gingerbread crumbs, I managed to spend a few days finishing up some glazing I started before the holiday rush. Here's a few pieces I unloaded from the kiln this morning that I'll soon be listing in my Etsy shop:

Recently I sent out the prize to Jane Murphy who was the winner of New Hampshire Magazine's November Spot the Newt challenge. I sent Jane a snowflake necklace and earring set,

as well as one of my festive fish pins and matching red heart earrings. The snowflakes, clay beads, fish pin and hearts are all made from white earthenware clay. Most are finished with a mother of pearl luster, which requires a third kiln firing.

Congratulations Jane for finding all of the hidden November Newts! Each month the New Hampshire Magazine features a different NH Made member. There's always a good reason to Spot the Newt!

What's New in December at Clayworks!

Ho Ho Ho ~ Before I hit the streets to hopefully finish my Christmas shopping, I thought I would update my blog since it's been a while. For some reason this month just flew by. I can't imagine why!

Now that my one craft show of the season is over, I'm focusing more on my Clayworksnh Etsy shop. Here's a few new ornaments that I listed recently:

362 lucky participants signed up for Lori Anderson's Bead Soup Blog Party to swap, design, connect, and share the results of our creative works!

Here's what I received from my bead soup partner Laurie Hanna. Laurie sent me this incredibly detailed lampwork focal she made along with a sweet little sterling horse button by Cathy Dailey, some silver components and a really gorgeous mix of blue beads. I typically work with ceramic and larger hole beads, so this soup challenged me to try some new techniques and designs. You can find Laurie's beautiful beaded jewelry and lampwork pieces in her Etsy shop Laurie's Jewel Box. Please stop by Laurie's blog as well and see what she made with the beads I sent her!

Using the focal and the clasp we received from our swap partners was mandatory, but we could use anything from our own stash to round out the rest, and choose to use the coordinating beads or not.

New Colors, & Soup Sent

Five New Coyote Cone Six Glazes! Well, New to Me. Since I recently created some stoneware sunflower pendants, I needed a nice yellow for the petals. Well, I had to of course try out some other glazes while I was at it. So here they are: Orchid Satin, Coral Satin, Cobalt Blue, Goldenrod Shino and Buttercup!

Using only these five, I painted a batch of components to check out the colors and see how they look together:

I particularly love the cobalt and buttercup combo! Together these colors really do make a lovely autumn mix. I listed most of these pieces in my Clayworksnh Etsy shop. The sunflowers and some of the components are already en route to their new owner.

I also included a mixture of my earthenware and stoneware beads and components in her batch, along with some glass beads that I felt really picked up the hues in the stoneware components.

I'm now experimenting with mixing some of the colors from the new five, with some of my other Coyote glaze favorites like Pansy Purple and Almost Teal.

I've started listing them in my Clayworksnh Etsy shop, and will keep listing them throughout the week.

Bead Soup Arrival!

My bead soup mix arrived from Laurie the other day! I couldn't have been more excited when I opened up the package, and found this incredible mix of blues, silver.....

and this amazingly detailed lampwork focal bead! Laurie makes lampwork beads, so I think this may be one that she made. The camera doesn't do this bead justice, it's absolutely stunning with it's layers and swirls of rich deep blues, aqua, earth tones and a hint of plum.

The bead strands Laurie included have a variety of textures and hues, and go so well with the colors in the lampwork bead. It's obvious she took a lot of care in selecting just the right tones.

Laurie included some silver components as well,

and look at this beautiful little sterling clasp with an etched horse ~ So sweet!

I typically work with ceramic and larger hole beads, so these will be a challenge for me, but I'm having a lot of fun trying to figure out the possibilities of how they will come together!

What a treat - I've been looking forward to this since the last Bead Soup Party! I just found out that my swap partner is Laurie Hanna! Laurie is from beautiful San Luis Obispo CA. From taking a peek at Laurie's blog - Laurie's Jewel Box, and her Etsy shop, I know I am already a fan.

I really love her distinct style, use of pounded metal with stones and pearls, her use of twisted wire,

and Laurie also makes her own lampwork beads. I'm so lucky to be paired up with this talented designer!

It will be great fun to see the mix Laurie sends my way - and I'll be putting her mix together soon as well.

Finally!

Our hydrangea bushes have finally bloomed!

About eight years ago we planted three blue hydrangea bushes in our front yard, and for years and years we didn't get one flower. Someone suggested putting pine needles under them to add some acidity to the soil, so I tried that, among other things. Not one bloom until......... Two years ago, we got One Flower!!!

One Total flower from the three bushes. That's right, Not one each. We Loved that flower. We talked to that flower, we sang to that flower, we gloried in that One flower.

We watched it grow and at the end of the season I pruned it, and took the bloom inside. Although it's a little crunchy and not as colorful, I still have it. We thought - Finally - There's hope! Maybe next year they will take off and we will have more blooms. Then Last year.... Well, not even One flower appeared!! So much for all of those terrific tips I tried. But This year..........

The glory has returned and all three have an abundance of beautiful blue blooms.

I found this great blog that's called HYDRANGEAS! HYDRANGEAS! that has suggestions on when and how to prune your hydrangeas for the best results. I plan to check it out myself. Maybe there's hope for next year.... But for now, we have a lot of singing to do.

Second July Cup of Bead Soup Creation by Lori Anderson

Yes~! This month jewelry designer Lori Anderson from Pretty Things is creating pieces from a variety of pendants and beads I sent her for her July Cup of Bead Soup! One of the pendants I sent Lori is this dancing starfish pendant made from tan speckled stoneware clay. The pendant was kiln fired to cone six, then glazed with my favorite shades of Coyote glazes - Turquoise Matt, Pansy Purple and Almost Teal, which really go well with this type of clay. I lightly glazed the starfish and raised portions of the waves in Shino, which really allows the details of the speckled clay and the natural design of the starfish to show through.

The soup batch also included some of my matching stoneware beads in different sizes. I was really looking forward to what Lori would come up with for a design.......

As it turns out, and not at all surprisingly, Lori designed this Amazing necklace with these beachy stoneware pieces... I am so excited to see this finished piece Lori created. ~

It's so cool to have an another artist's eye on my work, and to see a totally different approach than I would have ever thought of, and to behold the finished results. I just think the combination of Lori's wire work, the Vintaj pieces, floral bone beads, and antiqued brass chain links are a perfect combination with the stoneware beads. A personal favorite highlight is how Lori used the smaller beads in the middle of the links combined with those sweet little wooden beads. To finish the piece, Lori used some purple faux suede and gorgeous Vintaj clasp - which is genius and really also brings out the purple in the pendant! Results of Mother of Pearl Firing

Here's the results of last weekend's mother of pearl firing.

As mentioned in an earlier post, I glazed several pendants, beads and cabochons in various shades of greens, purples and corals.

Then, after the initial glaze firing, an additional coat of mother of pearl luster was applied. Which you can see in another previous post that the mother of pearl is dark blue before it's fired. This is how the pieces look after the mother of pearl firing:

It creates a luminescent shine, which makes for a very rich and opalescent appearance.

It's not the best choice for everything, and I don't usually use it for my really detailed pieces such as snowflakes and autumn leaves for instance because it can detract or mottle the detail.

I do however think it's a good fit for my seashore pieces.

I've started to list these in my Clayworksnh Etsy shop, and will continue to throughout the next few weeks. Thanks so much for stopping by!

First Showing of Lori's July Cup of Bead Soup!

Yesterday Lori Anderson of Pretty Things revealed the results of her work with the first group of beads I sent her for the July Cup of Bead Soup!

Lori used the pendant I made from earthenware clay.

To achieve this raised detailed swirly leaf effect, I pressed the clay into a large floral stamp. The pendant was then glazed with a mix of light and dark turquoise, medium blue, sky blue and blue green. I also sent Lori some ceramic beads made from white clay, glazed in matching shades of blue.

A third firing was done with mother of pearl which gives the pieces a rich, opalescent appearance.

I was so excited to send these beads to Lori to see what she would do with them. I love the idea of the net! I think it's a perfect theme for these beads ~~

Lori used a piece of raw linen to get this "caught in the sea net" effect, and finished this catch with one of my ceramic toggles. I really like the way the beads are spaced, and choice of copper elements. To learn more about Lori's process and the techniques she used on this piece, check out her post here:

A little painting, a little yaking....

Ah, what could be more perfect....

For the Fourth of July we headed up to the family camp. Probably my most favorite place to be.

My idea of a perfect day is heading up there and spending the day enjoying the pond, and having time to relax which usually means creating. Typically playing with clay or glazing. This time I packed up some earthenware bisque pieces, underglazes, bead racks, brushes and palettes. I had them all set up nicely outside on the picnic table, and out of nowhere, came a flash of lightning. So I moved everything on the porch...

I decided to bring anything but blue glazes, because I love blue so much it seems I've been going heavy in that direction lately.

So I brought only shades of salmon, pink, reds, corals,

lavender, lilac, amethyst, orchid,

bright green, avacado, blue green (ok that's the only blue - sort of), and light green.

After painting for a while, the storm passed over, and the sky cleared up again.

So I decided to take the kayak out for a spin around the pond.

There wasn't a soul out there except birds and some croaking frogs.

I'm always finding interesting plants out there, so I find it fascinating to stay close to the shore and see what's blooming. This pink flowering bush caught my eye. My friend Lisa Amato Staten helped me identify it and it's called Mountain Laurel.

Apparently this pond monster has been out there for years, but it was especially noticable this trip. It was munching on some millfoil and other delicious pond treats.

Before packing up I had time to go back and finish up another coat of glaze.

I love this place.

Lori Anderson's July Cup of Bead Soup!

Lori Anderson ~ artist, blogger, and jewelry designer of Pretty Things hosts a Cup of Bead Soup each month. What's a Cup of Bead Soup? Every month a different bead artist sends Lori a batch of beads, and Lori takes the ingredients she receives, creates fabulous finished jewelry pieces ~ and blogs about her techniques, thought processes, and obstacles she meets along the way.

For the month of July, I'm excited to say Lori will be using some of my clay pendants and beads in her creations! To celebrate summer, I sent Lori some of my new stoneware beach theme elements featuring starfish, waves and Atlantic auger shells.

Seashore Soup

A few years ago when on vacation in Florida, I spent some time making some tile molds, which I did use to make some tiles, but haven't had a chance to glaze yet. From out of nowhere a couple weeks ago I had a thought that I should use them to make some pendants. Ahh! Brilliant! Why didn't I think of that before? Probably because they're a bit larger than what I'm used to making, but hey, some people probably prefer larger focal beads.

Here's a few bisque pendants I made from white low fire clay.

And a few made from stoneware clay that haven't been fired yet.

Upcoming Event~
Lori Anderson of Pretty Things hosts a Cup of Bead Soup ~ where every month a different artist sends her a sight unseen batch of beads, and Lori blogs about the process of using those beads to create finished jewelry pieces. I'm very excited to say I'll be featured in July, and it will be really fun to see what Lori creates with the soup ingredients I send her.

I'm in the process of painting some of my new beads and pendants to send Lori, and don't even know myself which ones I'll choose. I'd like to send her some stoneware as well as some low fire white clay pieces. You'll need to check out Lori's July Cup of Bead Soup creations to find out more.

The 7000 Bracelets for Hope Blog Hop!

The Global Genes Project, launched the “7,000 Bracelets for Hope” campaign to support families and children living with rare disease.

Jewelry designer Lori Anderson came up with the idea for this blog hop, and rounded up 112 participants who have made blue jean/denim inspired bracelets to help support the cause!

Here's the bracelet that I made for the event~

Lori suggested we use an adjustable clasp, so I chose one with a hook and chain.

I used various blue glass beads - faceted, roundels, and seed beads, with silver spacers and clasp.

The focal is one of my blue stoneware ceramic beads.

I hope someone will enjoy wearing my bracelet as much a I enjoyed making it.

Autism Awareness Month Giveaway

April is Autism Awareness Month.

There are many great websites with information about this developmental disorder which Time says "One in 110 American children are considered to fall somewhere along the autism spectrum, according to the latest report released by the federal government." You may know someone with autism, as I do, and know the challenges that they and their families face on a daily basis.

A few years ago, someone who works with children and adults with autism commissioned me to make some autism puzzle pins for her organization's store.

I made puzzle pins in all colors, shapes and sizes, and hand painted Autism on them. Unfortunately due to an illness she had to close her shop. This month, I'm giving away 20 of my handmade autism pins which are made from a white, kiln fired clay, glazed and fired a second time.

I hope you like the results of my slab technique seashore frame with turquoise, blues, purple and greens. I think the tan speckled stoneware clay is perfect for that beachy feel. The swirls and waves are left unglazed for a more sandy texture which makes a nice contrast with the glaze.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, I had intended to make a mirror frame, but since it did shrink a bit too much while drying, and firing, it is now a Frame which can be used for a photo or mirror. I'll just be getting a little smaller mirror to fit the piece. In that post you can see the process of how I created the piece.

I decided I would try more than one color on the eggs this time, and was happy to see that the colors didn't bleed, and stayed where I put them...

I used my new Coyote glazes Almost Teal,

Fire Opal, Really Red,

Turquoise Matt, Oasis Blue,

Gun Metal Green,

Butterscotch Shino,

and Eggplant.

New Cone Six Pendants, Birdie Earrings, and the Donut Mirror Reveal!

Working on a Donut

A donut shaped mirror that is, for the Etsy Mud Team Donut Challenge which is April 11 - 17.

I've been wanting to make some mirrors for a few years now. I figured this would be a great opportunity to give it a try. I took out some of my seashore molds and started rolling, pressing, cutting and shaping away with my tan speckled clay.

I started by cutting round bases to work on, making them about about an inch wider in diameter than the mirror blanks.

If I had thought more about how much stoneware clay shrinks, I would have made the bases and holes quite a bit larger.

Here's the first one......

The one below is the one I'm going with for the challenge........

This is after the bisque firing. A little shell and starfish detail ~~

I attached a half circle on the back to keep the mirror blank secure, and put two holes to hang the mirror from a decorative cord when finished.

Below is the piece glazed with some of my favorite Coyote glaze colors ~ Pansy Purple, Oasis, Gun Metal Green, Turquoise Matt & Almost Teal. I later put some Butterscotch Shino on the starfish and shell.

Of course it still needs to be glaze fired, which I will be doing tomorrow morning so it will ready just in time to submit my photo for the Etsy Mud Team Donut Challenge. The deadline to submit photos is April 10th. As usual I work better under pressure. I'll be posting a photo after the glaze firing ~

Cone Six Eggs & Spring Pendants

The Cone Six Glaze Adventure Continues. As I mentioned in my previous post, I purchased one of the Coyote Glaze 12 Packs, and had a chance to stir them up this weekend and see how they look on my tan speckled clay. A customer placed a special order for some Easter pins recently, so I thought it would be fun to try out some of these glazes on some of my eggs as well as some of my new spring pendants.

These are the glazed pieces prior to the firing ~~

I purchased the Glaze Sample Pack 3 from BigCeramicsStore.com. Pansy Purple is not in that sample pack, I purchased it separately. Oasis Blue and Gun Metal Green are in the Sample Pack, but are not shown here because I purchased them separately and they are in my previous post if you would like to see what they look like.

Here's the pre-fired and post-fired photos of each of the colors in this latest batch.

Yes, I know, Desert, not Dessert.

I used this very cool bead rack that I won from Marla James, and alternated some of the small bead rods I purchased from her with some 14 gauge nichrome wire rods I made for the smaller hole pendants with the wire I purchased from Jacobs Online ebay store.

I love this bead rack because of the way the holes are alternated which gives you lots of choices and flexibility.

Cone Six Adventure Continued

At 3:00 am, I woke up in horror, realizing that I used a rack that I made from cone 06 clay to fire my new happy cone six glazed pieces that were ablaze in the kiln. Ahhh!!! I had horrible visions of the rack exploding and wires and glazed pieces all sproinging about and sticking to everything including the kiln, or the rack melting, or, or..... Ahhhh!! So I put my coat and boots on over my pajamas and trudged to the end of the driveway over to the shop to check on the kiln. It was shut off, and I couldn't see any signs of disaster. I had to look and see how everything was or I knew I wouldn't be able to get back to sleep. I took a quick peek, and thankfully it looked as though nothing catastrophic occurred, and the rack didn't explode or melt. Phew.... I shut the lid and went back to bed.

The only thing that happened was the rack cracked, and one pendant stuck to the rack. It could have been much worse, so I'm Very relieved. I was spared, and that was a lesson well learned.

Thankfully, the rest of the pieces turned out fine, and I'm really excited to see how these Coyote glazes look on the tan speckled clay!

Lisa's Excellent Cone Six Adventure

Up until now, I've used low fire clay for all of my jewelry and ornaments. Inspired by our pottery teacher Sally who uses a variety of cone 6 clays, a few years ago some friends and I split a 50 pound chunk of tan speckled clay and some cone 6 glazes with the hope that we would have "craft night" and get together to create some pottery after work. Since we never did find the time, the clay and glazes have been patiently waiting.

Every year before my husband and I leave for our Florida vacation, I mail myself a good size chunk of clay to make sure I don't go through withdrawals while I'm there. This year I sent myself some of the cone 6 clay instead of my usual low fire white or terra cotta. To avoid extra weight in my suitcase, and the possibility of being strip searched, I send it a week or so ahead of time to our friend (I'll call him Mike) in Florida. My husband likes to surprise Mike with our arrival by not telling him that we're coming, but alas, the arrival of the clay always gives it away. Mike called before we left and said "I know you're coming, the clay arrived." Oh well. By the way, I also recommend this method of transport for wire and clay cleaning tools as I tried to smuggle those to Florida a few years ago and it didn't go over well with airport security.

This year, a week before I left, I had the bright idea of ordering a small kiln and having it sent there as well, to avoid bisque pieces breaking on the trip home. Frustratingly, getting a kiln quickly was not as easy as I expected. I tried several companies and nobody seemed to have anything in stock, and only made kilns to order. I wanted to have the kiln there while I was in Florida so I could set it up and use it. I finally found a company that worked with me and said they could get the kiln delivered while I was there. The kiln arrived, much to Mike's delight, and when I unloaded the box I discovered, it was not the ceramic/glass kiln I thought I ordered, but a glass only kiln with a door in the front flapping in the wind, and no cone sitter. Hum..... what do I do with this? Believe me, if I could have figured out a way to use it, I would have, but I ended up sending it back, and thankfully they were able to send me a 9 x 9 interior AF3P Jen Ken Cube with a digital controller before I left, that was perfect for what I need.

Although I had intentions of making pottery with this clay, I started with what I know best and proceeded to make some free form pendants, earrings and beads. The pottery can wait.

These birds were inspired by a piece of gnarled paper towel that was stuck to the concrete deck out in the backyard. I kept walking on/around it for a few days and every time I saw it, I thought, that looks like one of those cute birds I keep seeing on Etsy. So I took it as a sign that I should make some birds. I took a little crystal glass dish and pressed the design into the clay. I tried to save the piece of bird shaped paper towel I scraped off the concrete, but sadly, it shriveled up so I can't show it to you.

I'm used to a manual kiln with a cone sitter, but since we have a digital kiln at work, I have had some experience with this type as well. I programed the Jen Ken Cube, and commenced to firing it up. Since I had never done a cone 6 firing before, I found it quite unsettling to see how flaming red hot the kiln became and how long it stayed that way. It made me a bit uneasy..... All that red hot fire stuff. Anyway - I didn't burn anything down so that was a good test fire in my opinion.

I've heard lots of good reviews about Coyote Glazes from some Beads-of-Clay members, so I decided to order a few colors and give them a try.

I'm starting with some Turquoise, Oasis Blue, Almost Teal, Butterscotch Shino, Gun Metal Green and Fire Opal. The colors and textures are definitely different from the glazes I'm accustomed to. I'm firing some pieces tonight and can't wait until the kiln cools down tomorrow so I can see how they look!

Next up... I discovered Coyote Glazes are also available in 4 oz. sample packs....

My Bead Soup Party Reveal!!

Welcome to the 3rd Bead Soup Blog Party!
What is a Bead Soup Blog Party?

Each beader was paired up with another jewelry designer and tasked with sending the following:

~ A focal

~ A special clasp (not just a lobster claw)

~ Some coordinating spacers or beads

These are the delicious soup ingredients I received from my bead soup partner Emanda.

Using the focal and the clasp was mandatory, but we could use anything from our own stash to round out the rest, and choose to use the coordinating beads or not.

Here's what I made!

Canyon Sunrise Necklace
Featuring Dichroic Glass Pendant, Chech Glass, Venetian Millefiore, "Mostly Details" Lamp work, and Cobalt Dyed Fossil Beads from Emanda. I incorporated recycled earring parts including the chain, silver zig zag and turquoise glass bead with some seed beads, black crystal and silver spacers. The necklace is finished with a sterling silver swirl clasp I purchased at Halos and Dreams. This was also my first attempt at wire wrapping which you can see in the pendant area.

The black background really showcases the colors in the pendant.

So where's the heart toggle?!

I thought it was much too beautiful to put in the back, so I made it a focal for a second necklace! It's so gorgeous and looks like a locket!

Featuring Filigree Silver Heart Toggle, Cloisonné Beads, and Cobalt Dyed Fossil Beads from Emanda. I incorporated some Turquoise and Light Pink Crystal Beads and Blue Seed Beads.
